Phenolic Cotton Fabric Sheet

Phenolic Cotton Sheet Manufacturer in India

The glass fiber reinforced laminates were yet to become a convention when phenolic cotton sheet was already fulfilling its purpose – and after all these years, it is doing it just fine. This mechanical grade laminate, made up of cotton cloth impregnated with phenolic resins, is one of the most affordable and easily machinable laminate available in case you want both mechanical strength and insulation in your application. Harnawa Inc. is a renowned manufacturer of phenolic cotton fabric sheets in India and an established manufacturer of Electrical Insulation Materials in India, providing our cotton fabric laminate to manufacturers of motors, switchgear, and other industrial purposes from our Mumbai location.

Material & Construction

Phenolic cotton sheets are made by impregnating woven cotton fabric with phenolic resin, followed by lamination and curing under heat and pressure. Unlike glass cloth or glass mat laminates, the use of cotton fabric makes this composite uniquely suitable for mechanical purposes because it machines without fraying, does not chip and crack at cut ends, and is much better able to absorb mechanical shock than glass reinforced versions. These properties are exactly what have allowed phenolic cotton laminate to maintain itself as a preferred mechanical laminate for use in gears, bushings, and structural parts while glass epoxy takes over the electrical arena.

PF CC 201 Sheet — Standard Classification

This material is often specified as PF CC 201 sheet in technical specification sheets and IEC documents. Specification of the material using this notation in any drawings and purchasing orders will ensure that the procurement department and the fabricator know exactly what material is required, whether it is “phenolic cotton sheet” or “cotton fabric laminate.”

Color Options — Beyond the Classic Brown Phenolic Sheet

Although the brown phenolic laminate continues to be one of the most well-known finishes, which is a result of the original phenolic-cotton composition of the material, Harnawa Inc. offers its customers the full range of colors of this laminate:
  • Brown (classic)
  • Black
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • White
  • Gray
  • Also available in custom colors upon request
It is now possible for procurement and engineering departments to achieve uniformity in terms of coloring components without any material compromise.

Mechanical Strength

The phenolic cotton laminate is designed in such a way that it ensures mechanical strength in the material, which makes it suitable for use in structural applications involving mechanical loading, impact, or vibration where the less mechanically resistant laminates may be prone to breaking off. It is due to its mechanical durability that makes it useful for gears, cams, pulleys, and insulation load-bearing parts.

Electrical Properties

Although it is known for its mechanical properties, the material still possesses excellent dielectric and insulation characteristics, thus enabling its use in electrical insulation wherever extremely high voltage or heat resistance are not the main criteria. It is this combination of both the mechanical and the electrical that enables one material to perform both functions in one device.

Fire Resistance & Heat Resistance

Phenolic cotton sheet provides excellent fire retardancy properties due to the fire-resistant nature of phenolic resins as well as excellent performance at temperatures suitable for insulation and structural components purposes.

Class B Thermal Rating

The material is certified to be Class B, thereby making it a reliable yet cost-effective solution for standard electrical and mechanical applications where higher heat resistance (Classes F and H) is not a necessity.

Moisture & Oil Resistance

One of the distinctive characteristics of phenolic cotton laminate is that it provides superb resistance to moisture and oil. It is an ideal material for situations involving contact with moisture, industrial oil or lubricants since materials that are of a lower grade will break down in these conditions.

What is NEMA XXX Sheet?

NEMA XXX is manufactured by impregnating layers of cellulosic (cotton/wood-pulp based) paper with phenolic resin, then laminating and curing the assembly under controlled heat and pressure.

What sets the XXX grade apart from other paper-phenolic laminates (such as NEMA X or NEMA XX) is its formulation and cure profile, which is optimized specifically for warm punching. This allows the sheet to be cleanly punched into precise shapes at moderately elevated temperatures without cracking, chipping, or excessive tool wear.

NEMA XXX sheet is widely used where electrical or mechanical components need to be mass-produced through punching processes rather than machining.

Material Construction

Built from cellulosic paper reinforced with phenolic resin, NEMA XXX sheet provides a dense and uniform laminate structure with good electrical insulation properties, reliable mechanical strength, and excellent punchability.

Compared to glass-cloth or glass-mat laminates, paper-phenolic grades like NEMA XXX are more economical, making them a suitable choice for high-volume and cost-sensitive component production where extreme thermal resistance or advanced dielectric performance is not the primary requirement.

Where Phenolic Cotton Sheet Is Used

  • Gears, cams, and pulleys — taking advantage of the mechanical strength and machining capability of the material
  • Bushings and insulator spacers — used in motors, machines, and industrial apparatuses
  • Insulation materials for electrical use — insulation panels, terminal strips, and insulation pieces
  • Insulation of switchgear structures — for applications that require mechanical strength as well as moderate electrical insulation properties
  • Industrial machine parts — in any application requiring a strong and easy-to-machine insulation material

Completing the Insulation System

Phenolic cotton sheet is often paired with other insulation materials to build out a complete system for motors, switchgear, and industrial equipment: Sourcing these materials together from a single certified supplier keeps quality consistent across your full insulation and structural component stack.
